Owned by Rezha (below), a dear friend to the Maine Furniture Co family, our rattan weaving factory is located in the beautiful Central Java region of Indonesia. The staff here are paid well and treated wonderfully because they are highly skilled craftsmen, they are not pressurised to mass produce orders and can work or choose to take time off as they wish. There couldn't be a happier, more sustainable and ethical company and we are proud to work with them.
Our kubu rattan is really quite special. Not to be confused with wicker which is a very cheap, mass produced product, kubu rattan is is a vine-like species which grows in very specific areas in Asia. The biggest of these is the Semarang region in Indonesia, and as a result the ancient tradition of rattan weaving has been kept alive. Passed down from father to son for thousands of years, it is a highly skilled yet dying profession which we are helping to keep alive by promoting its qualities. Rattan is 100% sustainable, being a very fast growing and self replenishing resource. It fits beautifully with our ethos to remain Natural, Neutral & Affordable.
